the reveries begin with a simple electrical hum – a starting signal for the appearance of a vibrant array of sound, shifting before us in seemingly random motion. before we know it, all those pulsating melodies, razor-cut hifi-house beats and drunken robot jazz ensembles start forming into patterns, secretly & perfectly designed by one art alfie. a long time operator in stockholm’s small but insistent underground music scene, oscar wedrén broke through internationally in 2012 with the karlovak project, founded with on-off studio and dj partner rudolf nordström, a.k.a. mr. tophat. the duo’s inexplicably fresh takes on classic dance music tropes is as much a result of a brilliantly odd pairing of personalities as of a defined concept and a precise method in searching for the perfect house groove. while writing reveries of, released early spring 2017 through studio barnhus, art alfie freed himself of all conceptual footholds, delving instead deep into his archives of old and new memories and feels, working with improptu field recordings and emotionally-guided sampling processes. he came back with an intricate and personal debut album and he didn’t lose his groove on the way.

late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini’s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem’s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

alex cortex delivering the heat!! mr cortex is kicking hard with a direct and mental techno tracks! oscillon, a1, is a bleepy affair, direct and repetitive, but please, play it loud and watch. rheometric is in the same alley as oscillon but bringing the bleeps and glitches trip even more in your face. combined with the fat but quirky bassline, it does the peak time techno thing extremely well. b1 s title -shear wave- does the track justice. backed by a fat downtempo beat, the distorted 303-reminiscent synth line cuts through the mix in a way that s impossible to ignore. strain rate tensor rounds up the previous three cuts, also in a very dancefloor-friendly manner. bubbly main lead and anxiety-inducing pad sneaking in the background seem to be the main thing, until another synth hits you as a counterpoint and flips everything upside down. proper no-nonsens stuff!!

in today’s increasingly barren rock and roll landscape, ulan bator stand as beacons of explorative songwriting. formed in paris in 1993 by amaury cambuzat (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and olivier manchion (bass), the band’s atmospheric approach to composition has consistently yielded guitar-driven avant-rock at once hypnotic and untamed. and while their sound has developed in a variety of directions – often in relationship to changing line-ups and various collaborations, including with krautrock legends faust and swans michael gira – ulan bator’s resist simple categorization: kraut-y repetition, post-rock guitar flourishes, kosmische synth work, intimate whispering and pounding drums have all taken an audible lead throughout their now twenty-year career.

underground quality boss jus ed is beginning 2017 in fine fettle, with transition his first album since 2014 heading up a spate of vinyl releases. the triple-vinyl set is full of evocative, immaculately produced deep house treats, from the alton miller style intricacy of the loop 222 bodin strasse and shuffling, yearning the day prince died, to the rich bass and dancing drum machine hits of medellin my new grooveland (inspired, apparently, by a recent trip to colombia), and the low-slung, motor city grooves of sci-fi connection. best of all, though, is the rushing positivity of spring is near, where intertwining synth lines bubble away over a fizzing, techno-influenced rhythm track.

globe trotting crate digger daniel t, exploded on to the scene with a string of releases after his amazing debut tetrachromat on young adults a couple of years back. daniel has been growing some serious gems in his laboratory. two gems that have come to maturity and have been plucked for the fahrenheit/celsius ep on cosmic pint glass records. daniel has crafted something special in these two cuts. beautiful, bouncy and positive tracks that work as well on the dance floor as in the soundtrack to a road trip. after hearing them, cpg called in their top men lauer and jack pattern for remix duties.

the record opens up with the poisonous title-track “two scorpios”, where sharp analogue leads lean on a relentless disco-funk groove, thrusting us out straight against the sweaty walls of the chicago’s muzic box. the airy and enchanting spirals of “solenoid” create a detachment for a sonic trip through circling arpeggios and sparkles. on the flip side, we reconnect abyssy to the “young soulomon” of early 90’s by a warm and robotics dusty house. the mood turns definitely more freaky with “slomo kid”: sampling divertissement with a punkish flavour and emphatic rhythmics, it is the perfect tune to shake down the whole ball of wax.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

dez williams, umwelt, fleck e.s.c, dmitry distant and igors vorobjovs line up for mtron002 with a set of diverse electro and acid cuts, shifting forward in similar, energetic manner of mechatronica’s debut 12”.
umwelt and dez williams, following recent releases on boidae and vanta series, make up the a side with two booming productions, only way i know, an ever-intensifying 100 bpm eyes-down roller and mankind origin, a heavy, melodic trip in signature umwelt form.

creme organization s jericho one label continues to set a fine agenda with its fifth ep, this time from dj plant texture aka dona basile, who also releases as dona and given. this is only his second ep under this alias, and is one that again marries breakbeats, techno and electro into electrifying new forms. things kick off with maybe sometimes , three minutes of brutal old school rave. maybe sometimes (2_3 psymono mix) is then a heavily filtered and stripped back version of the same tune that is brilliantly weird and otherworldly. lello from sda then picks up the pace once more with reversed stabs, slamming drums and rubbery bass all cut up with yelping vocals and dusty breaks that take you right back to the early 90s. on the flip, gargantuans is on a deeper and more trippy old school flex with bright pads and gurgling bass taking you higher, then cyclone (tribute to the 90 s) is just that with its frenzied drums, filters and euphoric breakdowns all run through with street fighter samples. d_one then ends the trip with a bit of ambient electronics, with odd sine waves and sharp sound designs placing you in an unhinged world.

outcast oddity returns for their first full artist ep. who better to ask than sebastian voigt? his contribution to the label s v/a 003 compilation called lux aeterna‘, was a transcending techno trip that turned heads earlier this year. just as the ep s title, or rather the lack thereof leaves room for interpretation, this music refuses to be categorised too easily. rough around the edges but effortlessly elegant, one foot in the past and one in the present, sebastian delivers three mature tracks that evoke memories of acid house, uk rave, sweaty basements, strobe lights and euphoric moments.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.
